Day 2 of approx 367

So today was less productive than yesterday. But it was educational.
Today I was aiming to do the same treatment on the sitting room as I did on the dinning room yesterday. I got like 80% of the way there.
So a recap, this is what the sitting room looks like before anything.

So the aim of today, remove the carpet, the ceiling and all the trim.
I started removing the carpet, and was mildly surprised that underneath was a whole different floor.

Honestly, the floor isn't well laid, but it is must nicer than the brown carpet installed on top. Anyway, it added an extra little phase to the days work, and was covering some diabolical work underneath.

So the image doesn't make it obvious, but it has massive holes in the concrete and for some reason a layer of mouldy newspaper under the lino. I dropped the hammer on the floor and parts of it shattered, so on the plus side it should be easy to take up. The other added bonus is it dates the renovation work to 1974 (ish) which lines up with when I think the extension was put on, so it is likely that the entire house was renovated at the same time.

Once the flooring was done, I started on the ceiling. This is where I hit a little road block. Now yesterday the ceiling was tiresome, full of dust, but easy to pull down. I thought this ceiling would also come down easily, and it would be quicker because it is only 8 panels. Alas, I was wrong.
The ceiling was chipboard that was exceptionally well affixed to the ceiling joists. So I got down two boards, which gave me a view of the joists. The cross beams are untreated and look quite new, the joists all look solid and sound, and appear to have been finished for display (sanded with the corners rounded), so I'm hoping a little restoration and they will be beautiful.

My plan for tomorrow pre work is to take down the rest of the ceiling (I hope).
So yeah progress happened, a bit less than I wanted but it gives me a job to do tomorrow morning.
