Day 84/549 Progress by inches

Last post I mentioned that I got a little freaked out by the previous owners renovation works. So I decided to move onto a slightly less daunting room. The guest room.

Now this is a less terrifying prospect because I already know the major problem in this room, the floor is failing. I could see that when I stripped the ceiling of the dining room downstairs. So pulling the ceiling and render should tell me if I'm right and that is my major problem. Let's hope.

In case I haven't made it abundantly clear, I hate the lacker painted panel ceilings and walls. So it was with great pleasure that I tore the whole lot down.

Which for the first time gave me a true idea of the roof of the house.

A few things I noticed, the big major support beams are in beautiful condition, which is a major relief. There is one minor support beam which needs to be replaced, not because it is rotted but because it is two pieces that were Jerry rigged together in a somewhat interesting manner to begin with.

A few very small patches of light where tiles have shifted, which will need to be fixed very soon.

Prioritizing destroying this room has a duel purpose, one it will give me a place to sleep, and two, as I know I am completely removing the floor, I know I can destroy a section of the floor in order drop all my debris from other destructive activities down the hole. This means I won't have to carry it all down the quite dodgy and very steep stairs.

But that means I want to do all the jobs which will be really messy and require stepping on that bit of the floor before I remove the floor. So I'm starting the long and arduous job of removing the render from the wall where I am making my hole.

This is the progress after the first hour. I am using a new tool for this, a destruction hammer, which is pretty heavy and vibrates like crazy, meaning I have a finite amount of use before I need to switch to another job for a little while. But progress is happening, showing a lot of missing mortar, which is not a surprise but will need to be fixed as I go.

It isn't a finished job, but it is a start, and right now I'm feeling pretty good about it.

Next steps on this room are to remove the rest of render and make a hole in the floor so I can remove all the debris from the room.

Next steps in general, because I cannot do more than 30 minutes of render removing in a row currently, there a a few other jobs I will be doing as I work through removing the render, the first of which being removing the panel wall and door into the room. The doorway has a vendetta against me (very silly short doorway), so this one will be personal.
